چکیده

All present models for explaining the Blazhko effect are based on the presence of non-radial components. Up to now, however, these components have not been found explicitly in the observational studies, which were all based on photoelectric data. We provide the first detection of a frequency multiplet in the line-profile variations of RR Lyrae. Performing a period analysis on 669 high resolution line profiles obtained with the spectrograph ELODIE at OHP, we clearly detect a multiplet structure, with a separation equal to the Blazhko frequency, around the main frequency and its harmonics. Additional observations are needed to decide about the existence of a quintuplet. The presence of the harmonics of the main frequency in the line profiles indicates the importance of non-linear effects in the pulsation. The complete understanding of the origin of the Blazhko effect still needs further theoretical modelling and better new observations. Our detection of the frequency multiplet in the line-profile variations is a first essential step towards a decisive confrontation between the theoretical models and the observations.

Irregularities in atmospheric pulsations of RR Lyrae stars

From high spectral resolution observations of the Fe II line at 4923.921Å, it is shown that the star RR Lyrae shows significant differences, both in radial velocity and in line FWHM, from one pulsation cycle to the next. Two explanations are discussed. The first one is the multiperiodic character of the pulsation (Blazhko effect) which was recently detected (Chadid et al. 1999). In this case, t...

Is the Blazhko Effect the Beating of a Near-resonant Double-mode Pulsation?

In this paper it is shown that the Blazhko Effect may result from a near-resonant type of double-mode pulsation, where two periodic oscillations with slightly different frequencies gradually slip in phase by one pulsation cycle every Blazhko cycle, producing a beat frequency type of modulation. One of the oscillations is strongly non-sinusoidal while the other is not. This paper extends previou...

The Macho Project Large Magellanic Cloud Variable Star Inventory. Xi. Frequency Analysis of the Fundamental Mode Rr Lyrae Stars

We have frequency analyzed 6391 variables classified earlier as fundamental mode RR Lyrae (RR0) stars in the macho database on the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The overwhelming majority (i.e., 96%) of these variables have been proved to be indeed RR0 stars, whereas the remaining ones have fallen in one of the following categories: singleand double-mode Cepheids, binaries, first overtone and do...

The Blazhko Effect of the RR Lyrae Star FM Persei

We have obtained 615 new V and R observations of the RR Lyrae star FM Per. A period search identified a primary period of 0.489256 days; however, the light curve of FM Per cannot be well described by a single period. We conclude that FM Per demonstrates the Blazhko effect with a Blazhko period of approximately 122 days.

A significant fraction of RR Lyrae stars exhibits amplitude and/or phase modulation known as the the Blazhko effect. The oscillation spectra suggest that, at least in most of the cases, excitation of nonradial modes in addition to the dominant radial modes is responsible for the effect. Though model calculations predict that nonradial modes may be excited, there are problems with explaining the...
